Set in the heart of Umbria, Assisi is the perfect base for visiting the magnificent and historical towns and villages in the spectacular and panoramic countryside. Assisi makes a perfect stop between Rome, Venice or Florence, to take a break from the bustle and enjoy the slower pace of Italy. It's also a wonderful place to visit for an entire vacation. Wander the streets in the company of monks and nuns. Have a meal overlooking the rolling hills and patchwork quilt looking countryside. Take a hike up to the abandoned castle and have a picnic lunch. You can do all this and more!

Assisi is the home of St. Francis of Assisi, born in Assisi in 1181 or 1182. The founder of the Franciscan order of the Friars Minor, Francis emphasized simplicity and poverty. Many of the stories that surround the life of St Francis deal with his love for animals as well as the saint's love of the natural world.
